A talk by Ralph Melligio

Presented by the Vectis Astronomical Society (For VAS members, you will be sent a link to join the presentation; for non-members please follow the Eventbrite link and book with a donation. Thank you.) https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/astronomy-talk-online-unmanned-satellites-by-ralph-melligio-tickets-265812230537?fbclid=IwAR0MdpJbRjvXP1ZIijBX3F7VsPjl7U5Q6kgaRsUC98SMFDEIbRb0l9X589Q

About the talk: Man-made satellites are so important to our lives, for navigation, communications, broadcast, earth-monitoring, weather, etc. etc. This talk provides an overview of the major components of unmanned satellites and some of the major milestones to achieving orbit and performing daily operations. The talk will look at the parts and functions of satellite subsystems and the pre- and post-launch operations. Challenges and techniques of satellite stabilisation and control will be covered, together with the challenges and hazards of maintaining satellite operation.

About the speaker: Ralph Melligio has BS (Computer Science) and MS (Systems Analysis) degrees. He has a combined 31 years (1974 – 2005) experience in unmanned Spacecraft (Satellite) On Orbit Operations and ground systems development as a commissioned officer in the USAF and as a spacecraft engineer and senior scientist / spacecraft engineer with Lockheed and Boeing after leaving active duty. Ralph has worked in many aspects of pre-launch, launch, early on orbit testing and routine daily operations across several programs including GPS and direct-to-home satellite television and radio as well government programs. Most of his experience is with 3-axis stabilized satellites but also includes a few years working with spin-stabilized satellites. In a first for Vectis Astronomical Society, Ralph will be presenting his talk via Zoom from his home in California!

About VAS: The Vectis Astronomical Society (http://www.wightstronomy.org) meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. This event is open for non-members to attend, who can book tickets using the Eventbrite link. The speakers come from all over the UK and sometimes beyond and will give a presentation for around 45 minutes, with a chance for questions and answers afterwards. Where possible these meetings are in person at the Newchurch Observatory, but please note that this talk will be online (Zoom) only.
