The Isle of Wight Cantata Choir is one of the largest choral groups on the Isle of Wight, performing a broad range of classical music, from traditional and modern composers, since 1956, supported by professional soloists & IOW Symphony Orchestra musicians.
On Saturday 28th March, at 7.30pm, we are performing:
One of the best loved choral works of the 20th century, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (“Songs of Beuern”) is an exuberant celebration of the power of music at its simplest, yet most versatile: beautiful melody and raw rhythm.
The themes are varied and explore the vagaries of Fate; the joys and beauty of nature, the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust. The renowned “Oh Fortune”, which is among the grandest statements in all choral literature, frames the revelry, as a stark warning of the power of luck & fate, with the wheel of fortune dealing out triumph and disaster at random.
