==============================

Join us for a talk by local historian Kevin Shaw on 'King Charles II: A Pragmatic, Clever, Colourful and Charismatic King'.

Young Charles had his teenage years dominated by civil war, royalist defeat and the execution of his beloved father, but this proved only the start of one of the most challenging and exciting lives of any King of England. This talk tracks Charles’ failed attempt to regain his crown in battle, his miraculous escape, followed by life in exile – until the chaos following Cromwell’s death initiated the widely celebrated Restoration of the Monarchy, something Charles handled with typical tact and diplomacy. For the next 25 years he revelled in his regal role, the country enjoying new-found freedom while the King and court ‘made merry’ in a new age of invention and discovery. Yet challenges were always present, from Plague, Fire and War, to assassination plots and opposition in parliament. Yet, unlike his father or successor, he saw it all through successfully – with wit, grit and good humour.

Tickets are £5 each with all proceeds supporting the museum’s work in caring for and sharing the Island’s heritage. Advanced booking is essential, contact [email protected] or (01983) 884198.
