Directed by Andrew Stone. Released in 1943. Featuring Lena Horne, Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, Fats Waller, Ada Brown, and Cab Calloway
In an era when African American actors and singers rarely appeared in lead roles in mainstream Hollywood productions, especially musicals, Stormy Weather provided a national platform for some extraordinary black entertainers.
And what more could you ask? Lena Horne - a vision of loveliness, modesty, and considerable talent - plus an array of dance routines, Fats Waller, Bojangles, the Nicholas Brothers (stars of New York’s Cotton Club since the 1930s), and Cab Calloway and his band. A bundle of honed professional energy that has it all.
Stormy Weather is category U and lasts 77 minutes. For your comfort, bring a medium/large cushion to supplement the Theatre's minimally padded seating.
7.45pm on Monday 24 June at Ryde Academy School Theatre, Pell Lane, Ryde PO33 3LN. Plenty of car parking space with dedicated disabled bays. One level access to the Theatre from the car park.
Admission: £5 members, £7 non-members.
