Written between 1718 and 1722, Bach's suites for solo cello are a pinnacle in the repertoire for cello. James will introduce each suite before performing it to highlight the extraordinary developments in music and technique Bach Required through the set of 6 suites, and to demonstrate how this music, written virtually 300 years ago is still so fresh and alive and still a challenge to every cellist who wants to study and perform these great works.

James studied cello in the early 1980s at the Royal College of Music with Eileen Croxford.

Whilst there he joined the Auriol String Quartet performing more than 40 recitals each season. A love of chamber music stayed and developed through his career and he is now cellist of the Bingham String Quartet and the Tagore String Trio.

With these ensembles he has played all over the world, broadcast frequently and made numerous recordings. He coaches on ten annual chamber music courses.

As a solo cellist James has performed widely in the British Isles, played Beethoven sonatas and unaccompanied Bach in Japan and Australia as well as the UK.Much in demand as a teacher, three of his former pupils are cellists in professional string Quartets.

He is professor of Cello at the North East of Scotland Music School and the Royal College Of Music Junior Department, as well as being director of the Abnyne Cello Festival which he founded in 2006.
