Taking 'The Drawing Process' exhibition in The West Gallery as a starting point, artist Nick Martin will examine the use and importance of sketchbooks in the wider artistic process, including their use in his own practice, in four stand-alone sessions.

Fridays 23 Oct, 6 Nov, 20 Nov, 4 Dec, 11am – 12.30pm, £5 per session. Suitable for all levels and abilities. Ages 16+.

Week 1 (23 Oct) Nick will talk about his sketchbooks from his Japanese Woodblock exhibition, introducing the importance of ideas. We will look at the drawing of David Hockney and his early figurative drawing in preparation for his paintings.

Week 2 (6 Nov) We will discuss Nick’s approach to starting a body of work by working in sketchbooks, then study the drawing of Elizabeth Frink and the use of the self in her work.

Week 3 (20 Nov) Using his sketchbooks, Nick will talk about the usefulness of preparatory work in developing a theme for a body of work. Then we will look at Andrzej Jackowski, and the importance of personal myths and the inner imagination of the artist and his or her world.

Week 4 (4 Dec) We will look at Nick’s sketchbooks from his time at Art College. Then we will examine the work of Henry Moore and the development from naturalism to abstraction.

Please bring your own sketchbook and a selection of drawing materials.
