Marieme, a 16-year old black girl struggling at home and at school, faces a bleak future limited by her race and gender as well as poor job prospects and her controlling brother.

When she joins a feisty girl gang on a Parisian estate, she is initiated into a world of troublemaking, fun and low-level crime. As she carves out her new identity she experiments with fashion, female friendship and early love but is soon drawn into more dangerous territory.

This is a powerful but entertaining coming-of age story which refuses to moralise or offer easy answers.
