Ventnor Botanic Garden is to host the Autumn Exhibition of Isle of Wight ceramic artist Andrew Dowden. The elevated Echium Room overlooking the garden, has floor to ceiling windows with wonderful natural light to show Andrew's distinctive, handmade, hand-carved designs.
A carpenter for 20 years, Andrew was inspired to take up ceramics after watching a bowl being thrown on a wheel, during research for a book on Isle of Wight pottery.
His work has evolved from simple shapes and incised lines to composite, hand-built sculptural forms, ceramic plaques and tile panels, with textured and carved surface patterns. Hand-carving is Andrew's main area of interest with the shape of the piece being more important than any particular function. Ideas are inspired by tracks in the landscape made by man, machine and nature. Influences from architecture, archaeology, engineering and machinery add further interest to designs.
Venue facilities: Cafe, WCs, Lift, Shop
