Quay Arts Cafe Exhibition

Island based artist, Andrew Rick creates dynamic colours and contours by layering and scraping oils on canvas, working up texture and tones over a period of time resulting in these vibrant and expressive works.

These abstract paintings are created by stretching and manipulating colour, making the eye wander the canvas and begin to see objects, figures and landscapes through the movement and vibration in the marks on the canvas.

Andrew graduated with degree in fine art from Portsmouth University in 2000, where his work focused on the architecture and scale of the city. He created large scale ‘portraits’ of the high rise buildings, painting in a very confined and linear way.

He has since been experimenting with the freedom of mark making, taking inspiration from artists such as Gerhard Richter and Claude Monet and sees painting as a constant learning curve of exploration and expression. He hopes the work invokes thoughts and discussions between the viewers about what they see and how they feel about the pieces.
