Books are packages of enticement and discovery that manipulate the pace and delivery of ideas while retaining the power to surprise the viewer at every turn of the page.
They can capture time and relive intimate moments in a tactile and interactive manner, unique to this artform. Travelling Motionless is an invitation to see the book as a means of transport; a ticket to journey back in time and share in both the glory and awkward transition between the childhood memories and adult epiphanies of the artist.
The exhibition is a hands-on opportunity to experience artists’ books as physical objects and narrative flights of fancy. It offers a chance to celebrate the book at a time when its role as a means of communication seems increasingly challenged by technology and political expediency.
Books, for the artist, represent a life-long love affair that continues to surprise, invigorate and entertain. A relationship that is open to all, young at heart and maturing all the while.
Travelling Motionless also includes the launch of 'Home', an editioned series of 50 die-cut house-shaped books exploring the individual home-based memories of 50 British Illustrators.
“Jonathan Ward’s artists’ books display playful ingenuity, sensual textures and intimate scale.”
