Transmission

Southampton Solent University School of Art & Design

Friday 14 December 2012 – Saturday 16 March 2013

CREATIVE CONFERENCE DAYS: Day 1: Wednesday 23 January / Day 2: Tuesday 12 February (booking required, see www.quayarts.org for more info)

END OF SHOW PARTY: Saturday 16 March 8 – 11pm (booking required, see www.quayarts.org for more info)

Transmission is an exciting 13 week cross-disciplinary collaborative project by recent graduates from Southampton Solent University’s School of Art and Design.

The exhibition occupies three gallery spaces at Quay Arts – The West Gallery, Rope Store Gallery and Learning Curve Gallery, combining the work of over 30 selected alumni from across several SSU courses including Fine Art, Photography, Illustration, Graphic Design, as well as Product Design, Animation and Gaming.

The exhibition will evolve throughout its duration; three shows will eventually unfold within the gallery spaces over the two and a half month period. The first exhibition, co-curated by Quay Arts’ Exhibitions Organiser, Georgia Newman and SSU Senior Lecturer in Photography & Visual Arts, Stephen Brigdale, is formed of works discussing the theme ‘Staging Place’. The exhibition will then be developed, re-hung and re-curated by current students from the University's School of Art & Design and members of our Young Quay team working alongside a guest curator in January and again February in 2013. New works will appear, some works may stay and some will be removed to re-interpret the exhibition with a new theme in mind.

Transmission #1 Staging Place: 14/12/12 – 23/01/13

Transmission #2 Manufacture: 24/01/13 – 12/02/13

Transmission #3 Play: 13/02/13 – 16/03/13

Also, look out for our Takeaways Takeover in the Café, where current students and graduates will soon be selling 2D works, limited edition prints, photographs, books, postcards and other works, which will be ready for you to purchase and take away on the same day.

In addition to the exhibition, opportunities for students and young people and support for emerging artists and designers will be delivered through an engaging programme of events, including two conference/workshop days on working in the creative industries led by artists and careers specialists on Wed 23 Jan & Tue 12 Feb which also feature gallery talks and tours on the new shows. As well as an end of show D/VJ party by Headfunk, this also celebrates the opening of the IOW College Co-curation response show in the Learning Curve Gallery on Sat 16 March.

Transmission is kindly supported by The Southampton School of Art & Design Faculty of Creative Industries and Society at Southampton Solent University, Yoppul, Young and Collective, Red Funnel, Steve Porter Transport Group, Headfunk, IOW County Press, On The Wight, VIVID, Isle of Wight Council and Arts Council England.
