Quay Arts Outside / Bridge Wall
Thu 2 Jun – Thu 1 Sep 2011
Guido Oakley is a multifaceted Island-born artist who brings an installation of reclaimed wooden sculptures inspired by the aesthetics of falling rain and constellations to Quay Arts’ Outside/Bridge Wall this summer.
Reflections of the Deep is a fusion of reclaimed materials from Ryde Pier, with the precision technology of CNC machining. Using the wood sourced from Ryde pier, one of the first great pleasure piers built in 1813, the timbers echo the journey’s of the numerous people who have walked across the boards through time.
The inspiration for the work has developed through Guido questioning what sort of reflections the constellations would make in water if they were to fall like raindrops. The constellations of Orion, Pegasus, Ursa Major, Ursa Miner, Cygnus and Cassiopeia have been machined into the boards as if they had fallen onto water like rain. This installation is an expression of these fluid patterns made solid in rhythmic, structural form.
