Lifeline diana parsons 1

Rope Store Gallery, Quay Arts, Fri 11 Nov – Sat 7 Jan.

Island textile artist, Diana Parsons uses digital print, stitch and dye to create a new body of work inspired by family archive material.

With its focus on pre-war documents, locations and photographs of her mother, Diana’s work touches on the fascination of the captured moment in photography, the relationship of the figure to its surroundings and the broader themes of narrative, time and place.

She uses modern textile technology to reproduce the unique qualities of her source material and to employ her skills as a painter, combined with stitch and dye, to reconfigure Island locations through the use of family archive.

The exhibition comprises of individually framed textile pieces as well as long panelled fabrics, draping from floor to ceiling. These works hang meticulously around the gallery as though they are memory portals, suspended in space.

After a long career teaching art and textiles, Diana Parsons turned full time as a practising artist in 2002. Since then, she has achieved recognition for public and private commissions, publications, and local and national exhibitions.

Originally trained in fine art, Diana’s interest in textiles developed during her teaching career. Her approach to her work is informed by traditional art training, particularly with regard to drawing, use of colour and the development of ideas, linked to an extensive knowledge and understanding of textile techniques and processes.

Diana has documented the process of making Lifeline in a small book to accompany this exhibition.
