Inspired by her experience of taking part in the Island’s Hospice fundraising event, ‘Walk the Wight’ and the 2017 exhibition by British land artist Richard Long at Quay Arts, Island-based artist Caroline Underwood set out to explore the Island on foot in all directions from her studio based in the centre, beginning a new body of work responding to the Isle of Wight landscape.
Two paintings were entered into Quay Arts biennial OPEN exhibition in 2017 titled ‘I must down to the seas again’ and she was awarded first prize of a solo exhibition in the West Gallery. After 18 months of development, Caroline presents ‘Bearings’; a new body of work exploring her connection with the Island’s land and seascapes.
Her responses to places are developed in series or as installations, representing the way she experiences the land and sea – not just looking at it, but moving through it, being in it.
Exhibition: Saturday 27 Apr – Sat 29 Jun | West Gallery
Walk & Talk Gallery Tour: Sat 18 May starts 11am, free
