Looping, Netting and Knotting with Tim Johnson at Jubilee Stores.

Looping and netting have been used over the past 20,000 years to make baskets, traps and clothing. Join artist and basketmaker Tim Johnson to explore these ancient technologies to make contemporary bags, baskets and wall hangings with natural and recycled materials.

Days one and two will focus on looping and its many variations around the world, starting with harvesting and material processing techniques we will learn the fascinating process of transforming plant to woven fabric. Participants will have the opportunity to make a finished bag or basket based on traditional models and functional use.

Days three and four will look at the ancient art of netting – using specific knots to make meshes of different scale and with a wide variety of natural, man-made and recycled materials. Netting lends itself to lots of experimental and creative techniques and following a good grounding in technique we will go on to work on larger contemporary baskets or wall pieces.

Tools & Materials

Please bring along a pair of scissors – all other tools will be supplied.

You may also want to bring along a variety of strings, threads, wool etc, to supplement those provided by the tutor.

About the Tutor:

Tim Johnson is an artist and basketmaker based in Spain, he has travelled extensively taking part in numerous residencies, sculpture projects and exhibitions around the world and thrives on the creative possibilities that new natural environments present. Tim trained as a Fine Artist and has developed his unique approach combining sculpture, installation, costume and traditional basketmaking over twenty years of creative practice.

Tim is an experienced tutor, a recipient of the prestigious Marsh Award for Excellence in Gallery Education and has also won several awards for his baskets in Spain and Poland. His most recent exhibition and residency with Monica Guilera: www.portsimans.cat
