East Dene, Bonchurch is to play host to Margaret Stewart and Mr Purdie, music publisher, (Chris and Clive Rickards of Shoestring Players) on Sunday November 2nd at 3pm where Margaret reveals the secret of her aunt, Baroness Caroline Nairne who, during her lifetime wrote over 100 of Scotland’s best-loved songs.
Chris sings and shares with you the stories behind some of the songs, giving an insight into the life of this fascinating woman.
Caroline Nairne, a contemporary of Burns, has been much neglected yet many of her songs are known far and wide. Who has not joined in with the rousing chorus of ‘Charlie is my Darling’?
How many can forget the poignancy of the fisherwoman singing ‘Who’ll buy caller herrin’? And the sweet hope of ‘Land of the Leal’ a song that, in its day, took Scotland by storm although accredited to Burns!
The performance will be rounded off with afternoon tea.
Tickets, £7.50 including afternoon tea, available from 852374/855854
