Set in the 1970s, while playing with his friends in the fields near his home in Southern Italy, young Michele discovers a boy chained to the ground at the bottom of a hole. Too frightened to tell his parents, Michele learns the shocking truth that the boy has been kidnapped and is being held captive for ransom by his family’s neighbours.

Despite the serious overtones and dark secrets of the storyline, this is predominantly a story of friendship and courage, but also one of the loss of youthful innocence. It is beautifully acted by the two young boys, directed by Salvatores with style and intensity, and lushly photographed by Italo Petriccione.
