The path

Ventnor Film Society presents The Past.

Ahmad, an Iranian, returns to Paris after four years to finalise his divorce from his wife Marie in order to move on with his life. He finds she is now in a relationship with a new partner, Samir, who has a troubled young son and a wife in a coma.

When she insists he should stay in their home, he finds himself embroiled in the deteriorating relationship between Marie and her difficult oldest daughter from her previous marriage. Our sympathies continually shift as explosive secrets and lies are gradually revealed and add dramatic new twists to the individuals and the story.

From the director of A Separation and About Elly, Asghar Farhadi, this is a finely observed portrayal of the complexities and mixed emotions of family life. Tension builds as each new piece of information is revealed and the consequences of past mistakes come home to roost. Bound together in a web of deception and shared histories, the characters are caught between moving on with their futures and being drawn back into their pasts.
