11th June – 12th September 2010
This exhibition of 70+ candid and documentary colour photographic prints features Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Donovan, Joan Baez, The Moody Blues, The Who, Joni Mitchell, Free, Hawkwind, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, amongst others.
The images capture the essence of life as experienced by 600,000 revellers at what was probably the world’s largest music festival of its time.
Also on display will be a portrait print of Melanie Safka (“I’ve got a brand new pair of roller skates…”) who 40 years on, returns to sing at the 2010 Isle of Wight Festival on Saturday 12th June.
In this, the 40th anniversary year of Jimi Hendrix’s death, Charles Everest (retired award winning newsreel cameraman and documentary photographer) has finally been persuaded to make these images available for their first ever public tour.
As press liaison at the 1970 festival, Charles had the enviable opportunity to photograph in all areas, including on stage and behind the scenes – offering him a different perspective on the performance than was available to the majority of the international press in attendance.
