Alfred basile

Friday 4 June to Sunday 4 July 2010

Alfredo Basile is a professional photographer born and working in Sicily. Alfredo will be exhibiting black and white photographs of the farms and those who work in the olive groves of rural Sicily.

Alfredo chooses to use black and white film photography as he feels it condenses the scene to its essence, and uses this medium to record traditions that are rapidly changing in modern Italy.

Alfredo was born in a town at the foot of a volcano, Etna.

His father inspired him with a passion for photography and Alfredo started taking pictures when very young.

He lived in the countryside which made him appreciate nature, the landscape, and the people working in the fields cutting oranges, corn, prickly pears and such like.

The combination of his love for nature and photography has driven him to portray the island of Sicily with its traditions and the use of the land.

Alfredo feels strongly that the need to record these images has become all the more relevant for the rarity of traditional agricultural work in modern Western Europe.
