Paper decorating

Sat 22 & Sun 23 Feb @ Jubilee Stores / 10am – 4pm / £95 / £90* concession

Immerse yourself in a weekend of paper decorating and learn three traditional techniques: Suminagashi or ‘floating ink’, Paste papers and Marbled paper (more details on our website). There will be examples of bookbinding, boxes, stationary and other items to illustrate the many uses of decorative paper. At the end of the weekend, you will take away a large selection of papers ready for use in your own projects. A variety of implements will be provided, and you are welcome to bring along your own objects to experiment with (kitchen tools can be used to great effect!).

Suminagashi or ‘floating ink’ is an ancient Japanese marbling technique using only ink, water and the movement of air to create beautiful designs.

Paste papers involve brushing coloured paste onto paper and drawing various implements through the paste to create patterns, which can often have a three-dimensional appearance. A variety of implements will be provided, and you are welcome to bring along your own objects to experiment with.

Marbled paper was traditionally used to create stationery and endpapers and covers for books and is now an endangered artform. On the second day of this workshop, you will set up your marbling tank, prepare the paper for marbling, and draw through the floating paint with a variety of tools such as brushes, combs and needles.
