Calling all artists, art and film lovers!
'Love Is the Devil' is Ryde Film Club's evocative end of April screening. Directed by John Maybury, it features Derek Jacobi, Daniel Craig, Tilda Swinton, Anne Lambton, and Adrian Scarborough.
When the film appeared 20 years ago, reviewers agreed that 'Love Is the Devil' came as close as is possible to how Francis Bacon saw, imagined, and expressed his vision of the world. John Maybury, who was Derek Jarman’s editor on 'The Last of England' (1987), directs here with artistic flair and panache. And cinematographer John Mathieson adds his own distinctive take on actors’ features, producing novel reflections to bring the viewer closer to the Bacon experience. All in all, Maybury manages to show life and life transformed into art - realising film as art.
