Secondary Surveillance Radar
Bill Douglas, BAE Systems

This talk is an introduction to Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) and its military equivalent and forebear known as IFF or Identification Friend or Foe. The origins and the differences between Civil & Military use of such systems will be explained. The talk will cover how SSR and IFF work including the Uplink and ground link aspects and the implementation and real-world deployment issues associated with secondary radar. The migration to a specific and recent development of secondary radar known as Mode S is explained covering the benefits brought by its introduction and the effects of the environment on the signal in space.
