“Wolcum Hevenè King” will be an especially atmospheric event, performed by candle-light. The concert begins with Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, sung with a harp accompaniment. Britten arranged nine medieval carols, mainly in Middle English. The sequence begins and ends with traditional Latin Plainsong – Hodie Christus natus est. The music is joyous and inventive.

Also in the programme is Britten’s Hymn to the Virgin, a short devotional piece he wrote when only 16 years old, and the Messe de Minuit Pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas), written by 17th-century French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier: a rarely-performed Baroque Mass which provides a perfect counterpoint to the 20th-century works in the Programme.

Tickets are £10 and can be obtained at the door or online.
