At the end of World War Two, as the Allies are sweeping across Germany, 15 year-old Lore must lead her four young siblings on a harrowing journey across the country to the safety of their grandmother's home, having been abandoned by their Nazi parents.

They travel on foot through a muddy, desolate landscape of starving people and survive by trading jewellery for food and keeping just one step ahead of the allied troops.

When a mysterious Jewish refugee offers help, Lore must question the beliefs she has grown up with and confront the actions of her own family.
