Kolya owns a car-repair shop in a small fishing town in the barren wilderness by the Barents Sea, but the unscrupulous local mayor has plans to acquire his home, land and business for redevelopment. When the legal schemes of a Moscow lawyer fail him, Kolya resorts to blackmailing the mayor with a dossier of his murky past, entering a dangerous world of lawless, vodka-soaked gangsters, corrupt politicians and powerful priests. This thriller, black comedy and political parable plays out in the shadow of a giant beached whale in the dramatically beautiful coastal landscape of northern Russia.
