Elisir d amore2

Following a sell out performance of Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare’s Globe, we’re pleased to report that Ramshackle Pop-Up Cinema is back with another love story in March. And this one’s a lot happier!

On Sunday 29th March, we will be showing the comic opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) from a recent acclaimed production at Glyndebourne. Donizetti’s light-hearted work from 1832 is a staple in the opera repertoire for its wit, charm and vocal fireworks. No-one can leave without a big smile on their faces! In this production the setting is updated to 1940s’ Italy.

Nemorino, a naive village boy, is besotted with Adina, a farm owner. She rejects his declarations of love. Fortunately, the quack doctor Dulcamara is on hand with a ‘love potion’ to help him win her heart. Adina seems to remain immune to Dulcamara’s potion and agrees to marry the swaggeringly elegant, self-absorbed hearthrob Sergeant Belcore. Will the wedding go ahead? Or can Nemorino win Adina around? And what exactly are the ingredients of the elixir of love?

As with Romeo and Juliet, this is a beautiful High Definition recording by Opus Arte, and the first time this will have been screened on the Island. You can see the trailer here:

For those of you who came to Romeo and Juliet we’re sure you’ll agree that Ryde Lions pulled out all the stops with their beautiful afternoon tea at the interval, with cakes, scones and sandwiches. We’re pleased to report they raised £220 for their charities that afternoon and delighted that they will be back for our opera.

Tickets are limited to 40 and will sell out fast, so please do book early. Tickets will be £10 again (including that scrumptious full afternoon tea) and we’d be grateful if you could pay in advance. 50% of all proceeds go to the Ryde Lions’ charities. The performance will start a little later this time at 2.30pm in Bembridge Village Hall. Don't forget the clocks will have just gone forward overnight! Each of the two acts lasts approximately one hour, so we should be over by 5.15pm.
