The Hop Kilns Heritage Centre at Briddlesford Lodge Farm will host its second visual art exhibition since its opening in November 2014. The new exhibition ‘Confessions’ by Salisbury based artist, Laurence Dubé-Rushby will open on Friday 6th March and will continue until Sunday 31st May 2015.

Laurence looks at the way the farming industry surrounds us, from shaping our landscapes to filling our fridges; it examines the relationship we bear with our food and with the animal world. Guided by a childlike curiosity, she explores the notion of life and death in the farming context; what is revealed? What is hidden? What do we know, what don’t we want to know?

During her first visit to Briddlesford Lodge Farm in October 2014, Laurence met the Griffin family and their cows. She spent time collecting stories from the family members, bonding with the herd and following the cycle of the daily farm routine. Using a playful combination of pinhole images, basic animations, audio materials and animal skins, she presents new narratives where the edges between humans and animals are blurred.

Laurence creates installations in social, geographical and historical contexts. The work highlights the relationship between individuals and their environment, exploring the notions of time, origin and place.

The newly restored Hop Kilns opened to the public in November 2014. The restoration took place to preserve the Hop Kilns on the farm and convert them into a museum and gallery space. It aims to explore and celebrate the rural heritage at Briddlesford Lodge Farm and, more widely, historic and modern day agriculture on the Isle of Wight and its way of life through collections, artifacts and contemporary visual art.

At the preview, visitors will have the opportunity to meet Laurence Dubé-Rushby and hear how she approached the project on Friday 6th March from 5.30pm. Judi Griffin will also be present to talk about the restoration project which began in January 2014.

The restoration of the Hop Kilns project has been supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund, and the commissioned Artworks by Arts Council England.
