Basketballs and Beyond - Wonders of the Cosmos
Jane A Green

Jane is a natural, eloquent and captivating speaker who possesses that rare ability to communicate the complexities of astronomy in a warm and easy to understand way. She makes the ‘ungraspable’ graspable.

Join her for this unique illustrated voyage, beginning with ‘something of nothing’ and journeying to all that is everything – using perspective to capture the awesome, inspiring and, above all, enjoyable wonders of the cosmos. Jane’s interest in astronomy began whilst serving for sixteen years as a senior officer with a leading British cruise line. Nightly cocktail parties became astronomical tours and subsequent successful lectures.

Now a professional speaker, author and broadcaster she shares her passion with packed audiences of all ages. Having co-presented with the late Sir Patrick Moore CBE FRS, celebrities and media professionals, she has been featured in various astronomy publications and scripted a live television/theatre interview with the second man on the moon, US astronaut Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin.

A guest on BBC Radio Four’s ‘Midweek’ programme, BBC Two’s ‘Stargazing Live’, various national and local BBC Radio stations, and co-presenter of the TOUR OF THE UNIVERSE – a series of national theatre shows with Media Partner BBC Sky at Night Magazine – she is currently Uckfield 105FM’s resident ‘Royle’s Astronomer’ and a co-host of Astronomy FM Under British Skies. Her book, the Haynes Astronomy Manual, is an international best-seller and was listed at No 6 on Amazon’s ‘List of Collectible Astronomers Books for 2011’.

As Dr Brian May states, Jane has “… taken up the challenge of doing for a new generation what Sir Patrick did for us all those years ago”.

Her enthusiasm, as with the science of astronomy, is infectious.

The Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. This event is open for non-members to attend. The speakers come from all over the country and give a presentation for around 45 mins. We then stop for a break with tea and biscuits, which gives an opportunity to mingle and chat.

The second half of the evening sees a presentation by one of our regular members showing us what to we could see in the sky over the coming month.

This always involves some great pictures projected onto the large screen. Entry to the event is free of charge, although as we run as a charity, donations are always welcome.

Newsletters are available at the entrance for a suggested donation of £2.00
