Freshwater Film Club present RIFIFI (1955) (122 mins - b/w) Dir: Jules Dassin Cast: Jean Serais, Carl Möhner & Robert Manuel

After five years in prison, Tony le Stéphanois (Serais) joins three friends in a theft from an exclusive jewellery store on the Rue de Rivoli.

The heist is successful but one of the men foolishly gives one of the stolen items to his girlfriend, who works in a nightclub owned by the man whose mistress was Tony’s ex-lover.

In Rififi, Dassin can claim to have created what is widely claimed to the first caper movie, and for the first time showed on film how a theft on this scale could really be carried out. It’s also a superb piece of filmmaking, finely photographed and with excellent performances throughout.
