Saturday, 27th September, sees the start of National Red Squirrel Week marked with Red Squirrel Day at the County Showground in Cowes.

The events starts at 10am and runs until 3pm.

Helen Butler from Wight Squirrel Project tells us that there’ll event be live hedgehogs on show.

There’ll be a variety of activities to take part in such as:

Make your own squirrel feeder or drey
Woodland monitoring training
How and where to observe red squirrels
Stalls
Visit the new hide for a red squirrel talk
Survey the woods for signs of small mammals
Volunteer recruitment
Treasure Hunt for children

10am Stalls open
10am Survey for galls, fungi, plants starts
10.15—1pm Make your own squirrel feeder or drey with Mike Evans
10.30am Woodland monitoring training with Dave Dana. Takes 1-2 hours
10.30am—2.30pm Treasure Hunt for children
11.30am Survey the woodland for small mammals. Meet at the hide
12.30pm How and where to look for red squirrels. Meet at the hide 2pm ‘Learn about red squirrels’ talk. Meet at the hide
