A 19 mile walk from Freshwater Bay. Not going to the Festivals? Then this is the next best thing! A walk from Freshwater Bay. Via the site of original Isle of Wight Festivals at Afton Down, Calbourne Mill, to the site of the modern Isle of Wight Festival at Newport; then on to to The Hare & Hounds pub at Robin Hill Country Park, where Bestival is taking place on the same weekend – theme this year: ‘Desert Island Disco’.

The Isle of Wight Long Distance Walkers Association is a friendly, expanding group and seeks to combine longer distance walking with sightseeing and a chance to meet like-minded people. A wide variety of coastal and inland walks have now been established to attract walkers of all ages.

Distances from 10 to 73 miles are covered, and a 24-hour round-the-island walk is programmed each year for the same day (and direction) as the Round the Island Yacht Race. Most of the walks are quite casual, with lots of beaches and bars. Other walks leave less time for making sandcastles, and may incur some blisters! Most walks are circular, but some are linear. Lunch stops are usually taken at a pub or café. Social events and occasional weekends away on the mainland are also organised.

You can follow the group on Twitter @iowldwa, and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/LDWA.IOW/, however this FB page is a closed group and you must request to join. Walk reports are available on our blog https://iowldwa.wordpress.com/ and photos on our Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/iowldwa/

It is not mandatory to be a LDWA member to join any initial walks. However, you are expected to join the LDWA if you eventually wish to become a full or associate member of the group. LDWA Membership costs about £13 a year, and not only allows you to join (and support) the Isle of Wight Group, but also opens up access to a multitude of other groups and walks around the country. LDWA website: www.ldwa.org.uk/isleofwight

Membership of the LDWA also entitles you to some amazing discounts in Blacks, Goodyears Outdoors and Isle of Wight Pearl – who all give 10% discount on all items in their stores. So this means that your annual membership can easily be reimbursed!
