The Orchestra are pleased to welcome back David Grubb as their guest conductor for this concert. David last conducted the orchestra two years ago, and has kept busy working with many mainland orchestras as well as examining for the Associated Board.

The concert will open with the well known Tragic Overture by Brahms. This concert overture is full of beautiful melodies as you would expect with the music of Brahms.

Following the overture the orchestra will be joined by the oboist Maxwell Spiers for a performance of the Oboe Concerto by Joseph Horovitz (perhaps better known for his children’s cantata Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo).

Maxwell Spiers studied oboe and piano at the Royal College of Music with John Anderson, Christopher Cowie and Ruth Gerald, continuing cor anglais studies with Christine Pendrill, Michael Winfield and Sue Bohling. After a year with the National Orchestra of Malta, he returned to the UK and in 2001 was appointed principal cor anglais with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, a position he still holds. Maxwell has played guest principal cor anglais with all the London symphony orchestras, although his main work is currently with the BBC Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Philharmonic. He is also a regular guest with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

After the interval, the concert will conclude with a performance of the Symphony No.2 by Schumann. This masterful composition is a very popular piece with both players and audience.

Early booking for this popular concert is advised, and tickets can be booked at the Medina Theatre Box Office (Tel: 527020)
