Special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen led the way for a modern generation of film makers from Steven Spielberg to Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit and all the way on to today's blockbusters.

The dinosaurs and fabulous creatures which he brought to life in films such as One Million Years BC and It Came from Beneath the Sea have been entertaining film fans for nearly 60 years. With the help of Rayʼs great friend, film historian Tony Dalton, you can learn just how the impossible became animated on the big screen.

Tony, assisted by film clips and one or two armatures – the moving models Ray used in his stop-motion and split screen techniques to combine animation and live action – will take you on an entertaining journey into the world of special effects before computer graphics.

He will also provide an introduction to our first feature classic film screening of the day – Clash of the Titans, Ray Harryhausenʼs 1981 interpretation of the Greek myth in which Perseus, played by Harry Hamlin, battles the Kraken and serpent-haired Medusa to save Princess Andromeda.

Alongside Rayʼs monsters are a star-studded human cast, including Lawrence Olivier, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress.
