‘The texture of buildings’ is a talk by award-winning architect Stephen Taylor of Stephen Taylor Architects. It explores some of the practice’s recent projects and the idea of how buildings are shaped by their sites – and how they shape our cities and landscape in turn.

Stephen Taylor architects is a practice that is interested in the social and cultural dimension of architecture as well as its capacity for artistic and cultural expression. Amongst the practice’s interests lies a strong concern for the direct emotional effect that architecture can have through its physical and pictorial presence, material association and constructional directness: an architecture that can be consensual and catalytic, mundane and dramatic.

The practice's approach to urban design and masterplanning is based on accumulating and gaining an understanding of what already exists. There is a strong commitment to the sustainable evolution of urban fabric through the development of appropriate typologies with particular concern for the potential for public spaces to contribute to civic life.

Based in East London, Stephen Taylor Architects’ projects range geographically from the north of England to France and Switzerland and include a diverse body of work in both the commercial and private sector.
