Speaker: Jonathan Whitehurst BSc PhD CEng FIET
Theme: The advent of the low light CCD cameras has revolutionised astronomy on both professional and amateur levels.
This lecture will explain how image processing processing techniques enable a near perfect image to be obtained, correcting defects in both the camera and optical system.
In addition, the techniques used to recover the image detail from 'out of the noise', manipulate images to match the colour and luminance range of the human eye, and even 'remove' atmospheric errors by de-convolution will be presented.
In addition to showing examples of the techniques and describing their limitations, the lecture will also explain the basic theory behind their operation.
Details 7pm for a 7:30pm start.
The events are free, made possible by kind subsidy of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Registration for the event, particularly for non-IET members, is required. Bookings for this event opens on Monday 1st February 2010.
