Pickles event

A great one for Pickled Onion fans.

It's a charity event that raises around £5,000 every year for the Children's liver disease foundation.

People from far and wide enter their home-made picked onions in for judgement by those who attend - they've even had a jar in from TV/film man Barry Norman. They battle it out for satisfaction of winning rather than the prize, historically token half pint of larger.

If you've got a jar of your pickled pride and joy and you want to be included, there's still a chance to have them included - just drop them off at the pub.

A Treat for Pickled Onion fans The tasting starts at mid-day. Kevin the manager from The Woodvale tells us that they had 36 different jars of pickled onions to sample last year, so the selection is considerable.

The judging is very democratic with anyone who goes along and tries the pickled onions being able to vote on their favourites on the score-sheets that are left on the tables.

Don't worry! - you don't have to try all of them - just as many as you feel comfortable with.

Once the votes have been counted, the results will be announced at about 2:30.

Raffle prize & auction Once all of that fun has ended, there's even more in store. At about 3pm the raffle will be drawn (there's over 50 prizes on the roster already - and no, they're not pickles!)

The items for the auction that follows at 3:30 sound pretty impressive, including a day sailing on a 25" yacht and a game bird shoot on the Island.

Given all of that on offer, you're going to have to search for reasons not to go.

Everyone is welcome to this free event, but if you want a table, it's a good idea to get in touch with them to book a table- and don't forget it's all in a good cause.
